Project Description:
Concerted Effort (CE) is partnering with the John L. Edwards Elementary School (JLE) and the Hudson Opera House (HOH) in Hudson, NY, to bring performing arts (music, dance and theatre) strategies into K-2 classrooms. The strategies focus on actively involving students in learning to increase both performing arts and English language arts literacy skills.

The program features arts-integration strategies and a multiyear sequence of professional development workshops for teachers developed collaboratively by master TA's, composer Julie Kabat and choreographer Susan Griss. Through the series of professional development workshops, classroom teachers and specialists are using the performing arts as a natural language for teaching and learning, and they are team-teaching in creative ways.

In planning last year, teachers took leadership roles as active partners, claiming ownership of shared goals, objectives and indicators. The Steering Committee and Project Team established the partnership goal to energize the school and build community through the performing arts, as we infuse student and teacher learning with curiosity, creativity, and reflection.

This year, the teams will continue monthly planning meetings to refine and strategize objectives, action plans, assessment of students' learning, and program evaluation. At teachers' request, we will

1. Continue and expand PD to involve a total of 48 teachers in workshops, mentoring, and clinics;
2. Implement artist residencies to model arts-integration strategies;
3. Expand outreach to parents in multiple ways (family literacy nights, inter-grade sharing sessions initiated by teachers, a prominent bulletin board at JLE and HOH, and participation in Winter Walk);
4. Research and purchase resources for classroom use; and
5. Document and assess the impact of arts-integration on student learning.
