Project Description:
The partnership between Arts Horizons and PS 46X, NYC, is an arts and literature project entitled Mi Familia/My Family. While embracing the school’s many cultures, it focuses primarily on the customs, beliefs, arts, and other distinctive characteristics of the Latino culture in this predominantly Hispanic school community. Its management structure is based on mutually agreed upon and shared goals and responsibilities. Participating classrooms receive instructional units comprising the following components: Big Idea, Literature Selection, Classroom Sessions with Teaching Artist, Professional Development, Family Celebration (Culminating Event), and Parent Involvement Activities. The program this year focuses on grades 3-5, where students are developing a script from .a book – selected by teachers and artists together – and integrating songwriting, and dramatic exploration into their program.

Achievements:

  • Teacher self-selection has developed a team of motivated teachers to participate in the project.
  • Over the past two years, curriculum has been created for all grade levels.
  • A series of Saturday Retreats for curriculum writing and planning provides the opportunity for close collaboration between classroom teachers and teaching artists.
