What is an ETSL Unit?

An ETSL Unit is a portfolio of documents, resources, journal entries. Users can attach documents, photos, audio clips, and video. Users can continue to enter information into the ETSL Unit throughout the project and then refine their "portfolio" as the work progresses.

An ETSL Unit generally:

    • documents the story of an arts-integrated unit of study in one classroom,
    • has a teaching artist and a classroom teacher as its editors and creators.

The goal of the ETSL Unit is to show evidence of teacher and student learning through data collection, assessment and peer-to-peer documentation and evaluation. The first year of piloting, 2007-2008 follows many years of hard work by the field of funded partnerships to improve their work. This year, 2008-2009 we have switched to a fully digital module hosted on the ESP Website.

Who is ETSL for?

ETSL is for anyone engaged an Arts-in-Education partnership in New York State.

Currently, registration is open for any cultural organization and school partnership. Space limitations may require us, in the future, to restrict how many units a partnership may request or how many partnerships may register for ETSL.

You may also download the PowerPoint version of the ETSL Unit, using the links below:

How can I get ETSL Training?

If you'd like to receive support while working on your ETSL Unit, feel free to reach out to your local RLLN to find partnerships in your area that are engaged in the ETSL process. You can find contact information for your RLLN Coordinator here.

You can apply for additional funding through the ETSL TAP Grant administered by Partners for Arts Education. ETSL TAP supports consultant time with NYSCA’s ETSL trainers so that your partnership can develop the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively use the ETSL template to plan, assess, and document arts-integrated units of study.
